Care-leavers: Authorities sign up to Rainer scheme

Youth charity Rainer's What Makes the Difference project, which focuses on education, training and employment of care-leavers, was designed to work with four or five authorities, but will now work with about 40.

John Hill, national project manager, said local authorities will match the funding that Rainer is providing in each area.

What Makes the Difference, originally known as Looked After Children in Education (YPN, 26 January-1 February, p4), is a two-and-a-half year "action research" project, funded with 3.5m from the European Social Fund's EQUAL programme. It aims to assess methods of improving educational outcomes for care-leavers, and develop a guide to best practice to be given to the Government.
