Leaving care: Charity slams poor housing for care-leavers

The report found that almost one in six (16 per cent) of care-leavers assessed were not in suitable supported accommodation.

Although local authorities have a statutory duty to provide suitable accommodation, in a worrying number of cases care-leavers were placed in physically unsafe housing where they were harassed and discriminated against by tenants and staff. Rainer has blamed a lack of co-ordination between leaving-care teams and housing services. Chief executive Joyce Moseley said: "No responsible parent would force their child to move out of home into accommodation that was unsafe, unsanitary or physically unsecured, yet the cases highlighted by this report reveal that this is exactly what is happening to some young people leaving care.
