Social Care News: Looked-after children - Care leavers left inunsuitable homes

A report published this week has found almost one in six care leavers are placed in unsuitable homes.

Youth charity Rainer's report also found the accommodation is oftenunsafe. According to Home Alone, Housing and Support for Young PeopleLeaving Care, one in three care leavers do not feel safe where theylive.

Chris Wright, director of services for Rainer, said: "Any situationwhere a young person is placed in unsuitable accommodation isunsatisfactory. Our survey of young people found 16 per cent are notplaced in suitable accommodation."

The report recommends that local authorities produce a list of approvedproperties for care leavers.

Phil Nettle of Shelter's Good Practice Unit added: "This reporthighlights the huge inconsistencies in housing and support available tovulnerable young people. There is an urgent need to develop a model ofgood practice that brings together care and housing services."
