Bullying: Schools are told to make a stand

Schools minister Jim Knight has called on schools to stand up against bullying.

The Big Stand event, organised by Beatbullying, asks young people andadults across the UK to stand up for one minute at 10am on Friday 25 Mayin defiance against bullying.

Knight said: "I would like to commend Beatbullying's Big Standinitiative to all schools, and hope that as many classes as possible cantake part. Bullying can blight young people's lives and it is somethingwe simply should not tolerate in our schools or in society atlarge."

Sarah Dyer, director of Beatbullying, said the Big Stand was a way tothink about the issue of bullying and to work together to reduce andprevent it.

The Government last week sent a letter to local authorities in Englandhighlighting guidance on curbing bullying on school buses.
