School food: MPs to stand firm against junk food

Schools minister Jim Knight has insisted the Government will stand its ground over plans to ban junk food from schools, following the first signs of opposition from parents.

Addressing a fringe event organised by the Social Market Foundation,Knight said: "We have to hold our nerve. There are going to be timeswhen it's pretty tough." The Minister referred to the experience ofRawmarsh School in South Yorkshire where a group of mothers recentlybegan pushing fast food through the railings.

He said the protest reflected the fact that some parents had beenbrought up in a culture where fast food was the norm.

"It really should not be any surprise that they are feeding chipsthrough the railings in Rotherham," he said.
