Budget News: Volunteers - Young people must be involved locally

The expansion of volunteering announced by Gordon Brown should allow young people to participate in their communities through links with health, social services and education, a leading volunteering charity has said.

CSV (Community Service Volunteers) said the Government should set up Care Corps, Education Corps and Health Corps, in partnership with local government agencies, to ensure that young people "tackle social needs in the fray and not at the fringe".

The Government should also ensure funds for youth volunteering are ringfenced, it added.

The Chancellor used his Budget to announce plans to fund one million new volunteers.

The Russell Commission on youth engagement, published last week, proposed the establishment of a national framework for youth action and engagement.

It also called for the creation of a volunteering web site portal, and a Youth Fund.
