Volunteering opportunities for young people

Efforts to boost the number of young people taking part in volunteering activities are well under way in all four of the UK's nations. Nancy Rowntree investigates how and where funding for projects is being spent.

ENGLAND

The UK has seen a focus on youth volunteering in recent years, especially through the Millennium Volunteers scheme launched in 1999, and the 2005 Russell Commission report. The charity v was launched in May 2006 to implement the recommendations of the Russell Commission in England, which include "to inspire a new generation of 16- to 25-year-olds to get involved in volunteering and community action". So far, it has commissioned 200,000 volunteering opportunities with more than 200 voluntary sector organisations. In November, it will unveil its National Youth Volunteering Programme to inspire 500,000 young people aged 16 to 25 to volunteer in their communities.
