
Speaking to CYP Now, the former Home Secretary said Prime MinisterGordon Brown, and Chancellor Alistair Darling should announce majoradditional funding for volunteering in November's pre-Budget report.
In April, the Prime Minister said he wanted all young people to do 50hours of community service by the time they turned 19. Blunkett has beentipped to chair an advisory panel on introducing this scheme.
Blunkett said the government should take some radical steps and followthe lead of US President Barack Obama who, three months after hisinauguration, signed a landmark law to expand community serviceprogrammes.
He added that the government could work with existing organisations suchas Community Service Volunteers and V, the national youth volunteeringcharity, to roll out a new programme from early next year.
