The next couple of months will see the roll-out of the first national full-time volunteering programme for 16- to 25-year-olds in England.
David Finn, head of youth services at Derby City Council, believes the £10.5m government-backed project, V Talent Year, could be a useful recruitment initiative for children and young people's services.
"A good 80 per cent of our youth services workforce started out as volunteers, that's how they tested the water," says Finn. "Some took roles as a break from unemployment and actually established good careers and made a difference to young people's lives," he adds.
Organised by youth volunteering charity V in a bid to tackle youth unemployment, it will be piloted by 33 local authorities including Derby, offering 1,000 young people 44-week-long placements in children and young people's services.
