The concept of a National Citizen Service is nothing new for Maria Dalrymple, director of London-based community project Youth Aid. The project has been helping inner-city young people to broaden their horizons and experience new things since Dalrymple established it in Lewisham in 1973.
"Our Youth Leaders Programme provides a menu of courses, such as first aid, public speaking and conflict resolution, as well as offering volunteering opportunities and residentials," she says.
Youth Aid is a small charity but has helped more than 1,250 young people over the years, many from disadvantaged areas in the borough of Lewisham. More than 80 per cent of participants have gone on to further education or employment.
