National Citizen Service fees slammed

1 min read Youth Work
National Citizen Service providers have been criticised for levying a charge on young people.

The Cabinet Office has admitted that some providers are levying a charge of £25 on average. The highest being asked for is £99.

A Cabinet Office spokeswoman said the fee is being used as an incentive to ensure young people carry on attending.

Those who cannot afford the fee can apply for a bursary. Some providers are setting up a sponsorship fund where those who can afford to pay subsidise those who cannot.

But according to Linda Jack, a member of the Liberal Democrat’s education, children and families policy group, the service should be free for all.

She said: "There is a danger of stigmatising some young people who cannot pay, as £25 is a lot of money for some people. It’s also a bad idea, as it will put a lot of people off. Many will simply not bother to sign up."
