Ofcom originally intended to review children's TV as part of a widerexamination of public service broadcasting due to take place in early2008. But the watchdog decided to examine the situation earlier after a"faster than expected" decline in children's TV during the past threeyears. It is also concerned what effects new restrictions of foodadvertising will have on programming.
The review will examine the current status of children's TV and itsfuture prospects in the UK.
The TV industry previously warned that children's programmes would be acasualty of bans on advertising unhealthy food to children (ChildrenNow, 22-28 November 2006). Commercial broadcasters say they could loseup to 39m from their budgets.
