There must be a greater focus on early intervention to stop schoolsfailing, says a report by the National Audit Office, which highlightsthe role of local authorities in identifying schools at risk andsupporting them.
Teaching unions and other education campaigners say the report,Improving Poorly Performing Schools in England, reinforces the need fora Government rethink on some reforms in its education white paper, whichcould lessen local authority involvement in schools.
"One thing that is crystal clear in this report is that localauthorities, with the right support, can work with schools to get to theroot of these problems," says the National Union of Teachers' head ofeducation John Bangs.
