Briefing: Research report - Specialist schools

1 min read
The Government is pushing for secondary schools to attain specialist status but a report from Ofsted suggests this may not be beneficial to inclusion.

Many specialist schools have no clearly defined strategies for inclusion, and arts and sports colleges in particular are falling behind on provision for pupils with special educational needs, says a new Ofsted report.

The Government expects all eligible secondary schools to attain specialist status in the next few years so all eyes are on how these establishments are performing.

The focus has been on academic results and specialist schools appear to be outperforming their counterparts - although achievement in specialist subjects has slowed.

Specialist Schools: A Second Evaluation also looks at other aspects of school life such as inclusion. It found barriers to learning are tackled successfully at nine in 10 schools, but said more should be done to establish comprehensive whole-school policies on inclusion.
