Briefing: Research report - Sport in schools

1 min read
By forming partnerships with other schools, educational establishments can offer pupils a greater opportunity to take part in sport.

Getting children to be active is a challenge but some programmes appear to be working.

School Sport Partnerships are helping more pupils to take up PE and sport and are offering them a wider choice of activities, according to a report commissioned by the Department for Education and Skills and the Department for Culture, Media and Sport.

"It's clear that in sharing resources and sharing sports teachers far more sports can be offered at a greater volume," says a spokesman for the DCMS. He adds that this is "precisely why we set up the partnerships".

Currently, there are 8,105 schools in 222 partnerships, covering a third of all schools in England. They are being rolled out nationally to include all maintained schools in England.
