National and regional data on obesity, teenage pregnancy, smoking,drinking and tooth decay can be found in Health Profile of England, areport published by the Department of Health earlier this month.
The report is aimed at officers and councillors who are involved inplanning, commissioning, procuring and delivering public healthprogrammes. People can compare the information against their own localhealth profiles (available from www.communityhealthprofiles.info).
Nationally, infant mortality has reduced. It is now at its lowest levelever and improvements have been made in child poverty. But obesitylevels and alcohol consumption in children are increasing and teenagepregnancy levels are high.
The proportion of obese children rose by more than 40 per cent between1995 and 2004. If current trends continue, almost a third of boys andgirls under 11 will be overweight by 2010.
