Briefing: Research report - Extended schools

The national evaluation of the Government's full-service extended schools initiative has seen many benefits for children who attend.

Full-service extended school services improve pupils' attainment andschools' relationships with local communities and families, according toa Government-commissioned report into the initiative.

The evaluation report, compiled by academics at the Universities ofManchester and Newcastle, looked at more than 200 local full-serviceextended schools set up as part of the Government plan for all schoolsto offer extended activities by 2010.

The academics found that the activities, tailor-made by each school tomeet local need, were having a positive impact on attainment. This wasparticularly the case for those children facing difficulties, such associal exclusion and poverty.

Another positive impact were improvements in the relationship withparents and the wider community but, again, these were more prominentamong those facing difficulties.
