The Evaluation of the Full Service Extended Schools Initiative foundevidence suggesting extended schools were delivering improvements andwere value for money. Researchers found the extended schools examinedhad a positive impact on children's educational results. Thisimprovement was particularly marked in pupils "facing difficulties".
The Department for Education and Skills-funded evaluation also reportedfewer exclusions and increased attendance in the schools and said theexpense involved in providing extended services was worthwhile.
"The cost benefit analysis suggested that both the costs and benefits offull service extended school approaches were high," the report stated."However, since the benefits balanced or outweighed costs, and sincethey accrued particularly to children and families facing the greatestdifficulties, full service extended school approaches represented a goodinvestment."
