DCSF Research on Extended Schools

2 mins read Education
The government has published two research reports into the impact extended schools are having on pupils and parents.

Remind me - what is an extended school? It's a school that is open to pupils, families and the community from 8am to 6pm for 48 weeks a year in order to provide a core offer of services including breakfast clubs, childcare in primary schools, study support, special interest clubs, parenting support, access to targeted and specialist services, community access to adult education, school sport and ICT facilities.

Do they provide what pupils want? It's a good time to ask that. The Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF) has just published two research reports on extended schools: an Ipsos Mori survey of pupils, parents and schools on their perceptions and use of extended school services; and a methodology for monitoring and evaluating the extended schools programme devised by consultancy London Economics.
