Deprived not accessing services

1 min read Education
Pupils from deprived backgrounds are among the least likely to be using activities and childcare provided by extended schools, according to a report on the government's extended services programme.

Extended Schools Survey of Schools, Pupils and Parents, by Ipsos Mori, found that 48 per cent of children eligible for free school meals did not access childcare and activities, compared to 39 per cent of non-eligible children. Children whose parents did not work were also less likely to access activities, with 48 per cent of children with no working parents not accessing activities compared to 34 per cent of children where both parents work.

Graham Holley, chief executive of the Training and Development Agency for Schools, said: "There are significant challenges we all face in raising awareness of the services available and in ensuring that the most vulnerable children and families are getting access to services that could transform their lives for the better."
