How to deliver information services to families through children'scentres is the subject of new research by voluntary sector organisationOpportunity Links.
Researchers looked at pilot projects in five areas: Cornwall, LeicesterCity, Sheffield, Rotherham and Somerset.
The most successful pilot was where a children's information serviceworker was based in the children's centre for a substantial part of theweek. In the project where this approach was used, enquiry levelsincreased by 294 per cent during a five-month period. Significantly, 76per cent of enquiries taken were from Black and ethnic minoritycommunities - a higher percentage than the proportion of these familieswithin the local community as a whole. Harriet Mathie, co-author of thereport says: "This model meant the worker could form links with otherprofessionals and go out into the community."
