A report has investigated the state of the market for children's services in the UK but has discovered that much of the information needed is unavailable.

The rapidly changing market for children's services throws up a range of challenges for everyone involved with the sector, according to a government-commissioned report.

Scoping the market for children's services sets out to investigate the state of the market now that children's services are provided by a range of public-sector bodies, private providers and organisations from the voluntary and community sector. But the study, carried out by PricewaterhouseCoopers for the Department for Education and Skills (DfES), fails to provide a complete description of current and potential markets because "insufficient data is available".

What it does provide is a number of messages for stakeholders to take on board in this changing environment.
