A report has called for an increase in services that reach out to isolated parents, particularly those less embedded in their local community.

More investment is needed in "virtual family" services to reach out to parents who lack support from family and friends, according to new research by Parentline Plus.

Isolation and Loneliness, a report by the national parent support charity, analyses 18,000 calls to its helpline from parents who said lack of family support was the main reason for their isolation.

The majority of callers said they suffered stress and anxiety, many had money worries, and more than 80 per cent talked about concerns over their children's emotional and mental wellbeing.

Half of calls were from lone parents, who appear most at risk of experiencing a lack of support networks.
