A study of looked-after children's advocacy services outlines inconsistencies and highlights the need for an accredited training course.

More work is needed to improve children's access to advocacy services,according to the first national study of the issue.

The study, Research Report - Advocacy for looked after children andchildren in need: achievements and challenges, which was commissioned bythe Department of Health and the Department for Education and Skills'says provision of services is inconsistent and there needs to beawareness raising to inform children, the professionals that work withthem, and carers and parents about the value of advocacy. It alsorecommends that all children and young people be given information onadvocacy services as soon as they enter public care.

"Advocacy services are more available in some areas of the country thanothers ... The research underlines the importance of improvingchildren's access to advocacy services by raising awareness of theirexistence," it says.
