Specialists in mental health have published a report that includes tips on protecting children from the effects of parental substance misuse.

Tips for professionals on how to protect children from the effects ofparental drug and alcohol abuse are included in research published lastweek.

The review in the journal Advances in Psychiatric Treatment is based onresearch involving more than 1,000 people whose families have beenaffected by substance misuse, as well as a review of existing researchliterature.

Report author Professor Richard Velleman explains: "Children whoseparents misuse drugs or alcohol often demonstrate the negative effectsof this through emotional difficulties, behavioural problems and socialisolation. This can lead to depression and anxiety, or involve earlydrug or alcohol misuse and anti-social behaviour." Based at the MentalHealth Research and Development Unit, a collaboration between theUniversity of Bath and the Avon and Wiltshire Mental Health PartnershipNHS Trust, Velleman is positive about the effect of professionalsupport. "We find that some children are resilient, they develop nosignificant problems," he says.
