Looks like it's going to be more paperwork and form filling for schools. The Department for Education and Skills (DfES) is currently consulting on schools' collection of equality and diversity data.
Surely what schools do is more important than what they measure. But how can you promote equality when you don't know how many children you're talking about? The question becomes even more complicated for young people who may have multiple issues or needs. Schools have been collecting figures on ethnicity and the number of children with special educational needs for a while, but the DfES is asking local authorities to expand the types of data collected in order to inform inclusion and equality strategies.
