Briefing: Crib sheet - School travel guidance

2 mins read
A consultation is now out on the new school travel provisions that are included in the Education and Inspections Act 2006.

Road congestion, reduction of traffic pollution, the dreaded school run- how are we supposed to get our children to school? The way climatechange is accelerating, buying a boat might be the best option. For now, however, the Government is consulting on the new school travelprovisions introduced in part six of the Education and Inspections Act2006, which amends section 508 of the Education Act 1996.

Does school transport still exist? It provides crucial support for somechildren, especially those with special educational needs. To manyparents, however, its restrictions seem stingy and arbitrary. Underexisting rules, local education authorities (LEAs) must providetransport for pupils under eight if the shortest route from home toschool is more than two miles, or three miles if they are over eight andthere is no suitable school nearby. The LEA can, but seldom does, provide free or subsidised travel to pupils who fall outside theseconditions.
