How do parents find out what local services are available for theirchildren? For information about local childcare, they may go to theirfriends, read Ofsted reports, or seek advice from their local children'sinformation service. If they wanted to ask about what help is availablefor their bored-but-volatile teenager, they'd probably try to ask theschool, neighbours and their teenager's friends and still be none thewiser. It's difficult, complex to negotiate, and time-consuming. But allof that is due to change.
How? Why? Section 12 of the Childcare Act broadens the remit ofchildren's information services. This new duty to provide information, advice and assistance is supported by statutory guidance andregulations, now out for consultation.
