The Government is consulting on guidance dealing specifically with the safeguarding of children who have been trafficked.

Does the current safeguarding guidance cover trafficked children? If youmean Working Together to Safeguard Children then yes, but only briefly.The Government is consulting on additional guidance that focuses on thesafeguarding needs of this particular group of children and youngpeople.

Why are children trafficked to the UK? For financial gain - the thingthat links trafficking to slavery, whether for domestic servitude orsexual exploitation. In fact, the draft guidance remarks on a number ofpossible scenarios involving children under 18: sweatshop and restaurantwork; credit card fraud; begging; tending cannabis plants on illegalfarms; benefit fraud; and acting as drug mules. Recently, there havebeen a couple of cases of babies being trafficked into the UK for thepurposes of adoption. Trafficking can also take place within the UK.
