BRIEFING: Crib Sheet - Safeguarding children

2 mins read
The Department for Education and Skills has issued draft guidance on child safety for schools. What does it involve?

Ah, 'safeguard' - in my day, it was called child protection. I think the word "safeguarding" is used to indicate a more preventative approach to child protection rather than crisis-level intervention.

So, what's this latest piece of paper about? Section 175 of the Education Act 2002 introduces a duty for local education authorities and the governing bodies of schools and colleges to ensure they carry out their functions "with a view to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children". Believe it or not, this is a revolutionary idea in some educational institutions.

This paper revises guidance dating back to 1995 and complements practice guidelines, issued by the Department of Health last year, on how to deal with abuse.
