Why is the Government consulting on child abuse guidance again?
It's consulting on a supplement to existing guidance, which means thatthe legislative framework (primarily the 1989 and 2004 Children Acts)and current guidance (Working Together to Safeguard Children andassociated documents) remain intact. The new guidance is there to alertpractitioners to the need to recognise and respond to cases of abuse orneglect linked to claims of spirit possession.
Are these types of cases common? More than one would suppose. While as asociety we rightly try to get past inevitable misunderstandings thatarise between different cultures and communities, we tend to get anxiouswhen having to deal with something that is directly linked to matters offaith.
