Briefing: Crib sheet - Images of child abuse

2 mins read
The Government is consulting on making the possession of non-photographic visual depictions of child abuse an offence.

What is "non-photographic visual depiction"? It can be a drawing orpainting, a cartoon or a computer-generated image. I read recently thatinvestigators in Germany are trying to find a player (or players) whopays for sex with child avatars as part of an online fantasy game calledSecond Life.

That is disturbing. The problem is that some people consider it to berelatively harmless since it doesn't involve actual abuse, but that'swishful thinking. Fantasy or not, this type of activity is often linkedwith the possession of "real" abusive images, or may be used to groom ayoung person to prepare them for a real life meeting. Virtual childpornography is illegal in Germany and many other countries, and theGovernment here is asking whether possession of these kinds of imagesshould be outlawed in the UK.
