Now the Childcare Act is law, local authorities will have to ensure there is sufficient childcare for local requirements.

Is it true that we have a Childcare Act now? As of July 2006, the firstpiece of legislation devoted to early years and childcare services inEngland and Wales is in place. I expect that further information,guidance and regulations on the Act will be pouring out from governmentover the next few months.

Will we have childcare on demand for all parents? The Childcare Act 2006has been developed within the context of the Children Act 2004. So theChildcare Act requires councils to improve young children's wellbeingand reduce inequalities. Councils have a duty under section three toidentify hard-to-reach and prospective parents, and encourage them touse early childcare services that may benefit them and their children,but the Act's duty to provide a sufficiency of services under sectionsix specifically relates to parents in work or training.
