The vocal Labour councillor, who oversees education and youth services in the Scottish capital, most recently caused a minor media storm by suggesting that, in extreme cases, young bullies should be put in foster care. Aitken's suggestion was quickly condemned by many within the youth sector, not least Scotland's commissioner for young people Kathleen Marshall (YPN, 4-10 May, p2).
Aitken stands by his comment but says it was exaggerated by media. The former youth worker sees the furore as just one example of a sound-bite culture preventing politicians and professionals from discussing and doing what is necessary to improve young people's lot.
