But if anything he has been working harder since deciding to leave and his involvement in several all-party parliamentary groups seems to have grown.
He chairs or co-chairs four of these semi-official special interest groups, including the children and children in care groups.
As joint chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Group On Children, the green paper, Every Child Matters, has been a key focus for Dawson recently.
"We've been spending a lot of time focusing on the issues that aren't in the green paper," says Dawson.
"The Government must address these if it wants to tend to the needs of young people.
