Big Interview: The word on the street, Dawn Butler, chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Youth Affairs

Butler believes part of the remit of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Youth Affairs, of which she was recently appointed chair, is to educate MPs about engaging with young people. "MPs should make surgeries more accessible by holding them in places like youth clubs and colleges or even Asda or Ikea," she says, suggesting that the group should provide a blueprint for MPs on how to involve young people.

Pledge to be a voice for youth

Although Butler only took over from previous chair Ed Miliband in July, she has been interested in youth issues for far longer. In her maiden speech to the House of Commons in 2005 Butler pledged to be a voice for young people, with the words "not all youth are yobs, and not all yobs are youth".
