2 mins read
It has taken a while but it seems children's play is finally being taken seriously at the top echelons of government. And the purpose of a new All-party Parliamentary Group on Play will be to ensure it stays that way.

Labour MP Helen Goodman is to chair the group, which will have itsinaugural meeting in early December. She agrees with the sector that itmust not simply be a talking shop.

The group will work hard to influence policy and legislation and Goodmanhopes it will hear from decision-makers such as children's ministerBeverley Hughes and culture minister David Lammy, as well as officialsfrom the cross-departmental group for play.

There are several issues Goodman wants to look at including the need tomake time for play during the school day and ensuring the extendedschools agenda "doesn't just descend into homework clubs".

As the Childcare Bill passes through Parliament, she will emphasise theimportant role of play in early years, and wants the group to addressthe difficult issue of risk and insurance.
