After the media frenzy that engulfed Commander Brian Paddick last year, it is surprising that his appointment as head of youth policy for the Metropolitan Police was a relatively quiet one (YPN, 20-26 August, p2).
Although the drug policies he implemented while in charge of policing in Lambeth, south London, may have slashed crime figures, the storm surrounding the relaxation of cannabis laws and revelations about his personal life eventually overshadowed these successes. Now that fuss has died down, Paddick is getting to grips with his new role, which he believes is vital to fighting crime.
"A large proportion of crime is perpetrated by young people," he says.
