5 mins read
Beacon status for excellence in helping children at risk has been awarded to four local authorities this year. Sue Learner reports on the preventative work that is taking place at the City of York Council.

When an 11-year-old was recently caught throwing stones at elderlypeople in a care home in York, a community police officer referred himto one of the city's youth inclusion and support panels. Alan Hodgson, early intervention manager for the York youth offending team, recalls:"During the assessment the panel found he had received 20 days'exclusion over an eight-month period and had been attending school onlyin the mornings. He was also being bullied by other children."

In response, education services arranged transport for the boy, George'so he could attend a new school. His key worker sent a letter to housingservices supporting his mother's application for a transfer to anotherplace to live, a mentor started to take George out to weekly activities, and he also received a school mentor. "The outcome now is that George ishappy and doing well at school, and they have moved house," revealsHodgson.
