Beacon Awards: Leaders in prevention

Tower Hamlets has won an award for excellence in its preventative work. Sue Learner looks at how this was achieved.

This is one of the mostethnically diverse areas in the UK with more than 90 different languagesspoken and is home to nearly a quarter of Britain's Muslim Bangladeshipopulation.

With both diversity and deprivation typifying the borough, Tower HamletsCouncil achieved a rare feat this year by winning a beacon of excellenceaward for its work in helping children who are at risk and for steppingin before problems escalate and get out of control. Tower HamletsCouncil was one of four authorities in England given the award by thethen Office of the Deputy Prime Minister. The other winners were theCity of York Council, Telford & Wrekin Borough Council, ShropshireCounty Council and Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service.
