Beacon Awards: Joined-up Journeys

Four local authorities have been awarded Beacon council status for good practice in integrating their children's services. Sue Learner talks to them about their successes.

Since the passing of the Children Act 2004, local councils around the country have been wrestling with issues ranging from the mainstreaming of Sure Start programmes to establishing children's trusts and managing pooled budgets.

Luckily, councils are not being left to reinvent the same wheel over and over again. One programme for sharing learning is the Beacon Council Awards scheme, run by the Improvement and Development Agency, which identifies a small number of councils that are ahead of the game and gives them extra resources to share what they have learned with their peers in order to raise standards.

The Office for the Deputy Prime Minister chooses different themes every year and, this year, 20 local authorities in England applied for the integrated children's services category.
