Vulnerable children: Four councils awarded beacon status for theirat-risk services

Four councils have been named as beacons of excellence for their work in helping children at risk.

The London Borough of Tower Hamlets, Telford & Wrekin Borough Council,Shropshire County Council and York City Council were all winners in theearly intervention (children at risk) category of the annual BeaconCouncil Awards, along with the Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service.

Telford and Wrekin is the only council in the UK to have gained beaconawards for children's services for two successive years, after winningthe integrated children's services award last year.

Christine Davies, director of children's services, said: "It's a goodthing for all the staff involved because it says their work has beennationally recognised as being of some considerable quality. But thereis responsibility that comes with it, to help and support other localauthorities."
