Schools: Councils rewarded for their efforts at Beacon Awards

Twelve local authorities were rewarded for their work in the fields of healthy schools and improving schools at last week's Beacon Awards.

The winners were named at a ceremony in London held by awardsorganisers, the Improvement and Development Agency.

City of York Council, Durham County Council, Gateshead Council, theLondon Borough of Tower Hamlets and South Gloucestershire Councilreceived awards in the Schools Improvement category.

These councils demonstrated that schools in their area are making asignificant contribution to improve the outcomes of children.

Labour councillor Claire Vasey, Durham County Council's cabinet memberfor children's services, said: "This is a prestigious and highly soughtafter achievement. School improvement is at the very heart of our visionfor children and young people."

The night also saw seven other councils win awards for runningprogrammes that have helped at least 70 per cent of their schools toreach Healthy School status.
