It's lunchtime at Belfield Community Primary School in Rochdale andsparkly, plastic champagne flutes shine from one of the tables. Thechildren are eating "posh nosh", a reward for good behaviour. Like therest of the pupils in the school hall, they've chosen a main meal from arange of healthy, beautifully presented dishes. As they finish, childrenput up their hands and school staff wait on them, letting them choose ahealthy dessert. Peaceful music accompanies the children's happychatter.
Rochdale Metropolitan Borough Council has just won a Beacon award forits healthy schools, the equivalent of an Oscar for local authorities.Belfield school epitomises what's been happening in Rochdale. "We wantchildren who are happy and ready to learn," says head teacher IreneMaguire.
