Councils awarded for child poverty work

1 min read Early Years
Three local authorities have been awarded Beacon Status for their work in tackling child poverty.

Cornwall, Newcastle and Tower Hamlets were all recognised for having outstanding frontline service delivery in this area.

Cornwall was praised for strong partnership working across agencies and tailoring provision to local needs.

Tower Hamlets was excellent at monitoring outcomes and using data to inform future practice.

Newcastle made sure that services prioritised the participation of children and families in their decision-making processes.

Catherine Fitt, executive director of children's services at Newcastle City Council, described the award as an honour.

She said: "Tackling poverty in local communities is an essential part of meeting the challenge of eradicating child poverty and Newcastle is at the forefront of developing a mutli-faced and mutli-agency approach to preventing and tackling child poverty."

These awards mark the tenth year of the Beacon Scheme, which is run by the Improvement and Development Agency and rewards excellence in local government and public services.
