Back Page: Social Claire - The authority on leaving care

1 min read
Claire looks at why services for young people in care should employ them.

We've been developing work with young people leaving care recently.

They've asked us if we could help them to set up a group that wouldenable them to pass on their views on how to improve the care system tomanagers.

When we asked them where they thought we could start, they suggestedtaking on a care-experienced young person to lead work on theprocess.

Who knows better how to inspire others than a peer who can act as anagent for change and speak with authority about the good, the bad andthe ugly when it comes to being looked after.

I suggested it to our HR manager. "Well, it's a good idea in theory, butyou need to be careful," he began. "A young person in the team will needintensive support and monitoring. It's more difficult than you mightimagine."
