Claire ponders the change in attitude towards gay foster carers.

I worked on a publicity stand during Foster Care Fortnight the otherweek and was amazed at the response from the public. A diverse range ofpeople came up, all with the same starting point.

"I've been thinking about this for years. Would I be acceptable? I'msingle/have a council house/don't work/have a disability ..." the listwas endless. People were genuinely concerned they would be excludedbecause they didn't meet some stereotypical ideal.

One woman asked nervously if we considered lesbian and gay people ascarers and I reassured her that we did.

Some of my friends, gay and straight, have children of their own. Forthose who don't and want to, it can be hard. I've sat for many an hourlistening to someone's misery, them wondering "Why me?". A few have gonedown the fostering and adoption route and it's worked well for them.
