Back Page: Social Claire - Why foster carers are essential

1 min read
Claire is shocked to learn there is a shortage of 10,000 foster carers.

I read in my local paper this week that it's Fostering Fortnight again, the annual campaign that raises the profile of fostering and the need for more carers. Our local fostering team are running events to publicise the campaign, from bus adverts to sponsored head shaves, and getting local celebrities to launch the fortnight itself. I wasn't sure what the background to this campaign was so I decided to do a bit of research, and what I found made worrying reading.

Did you know that across the UK there is a shortage of 10,000 foster carers, and that this shortage gets bigger every year? That means that up to 10,000 children and young people don't have suitable foster placements, if any at all. It's a sobering thought.
