1 min read
Claire is reminded of the importance of including Traveller children.

I was reading about a project in Hampshire that aims to encourage moreTraveller children to stay in school. Apparently, half of all Travellerchildren drop out between Key Stages 1 and 4 for many reasons, includingbullying.

The project takes a playbus on to a Traveller site to help improveliteracy skills and education opportunities. As I read, I wandered downmemory lane.

Twenty years ago I was the manager of a playbus project. We had aconverted double-decker and would take play and community activities outto areas that had no meeting places or had poor local facilities.

As well as running housing estate playgroups, we worked with childrenwith disabilities and Traveller families. The latter was my favouritepart of the week. There was only one approved council site in our area, and the county Traveller liaison officer contacted us to ask if we woulddevelop work with the children, who were unable to access local playprovision.
