It always began after bedtime. It would start with a crack against theother side of our bedroom wall. I would hide under the blankets to drownout the sound but it seemed to go on for ever.
The pleading that accompanied the banging and smashing was unearthly."No, please stop, please don't". His roaring reply was always "it's yourfault." Then more screaming and a little voice in the background."Please daddy, don't hurt mummy."
I would run to my mum who would shush me muttering "what happens behindclosed doors has nothing to do with us".
And I would sleep, puzzled and fearful as the noise was replaced by aneerie silence.
